Bloodroot (Sanguinaria Canadensis)

These early bloomers are a great addition to the woodland garden, and flourish in moist soils with direct sun in the spring and shade during the summer. These are native to moist woodlands and floodplain landscapes throughout much of Minnesota. They have white large-petal flowers that reach 1.5” in diameter and bloom throughout April into May, however each flower is relatively short lived. Plants spread by rhizome and will form colonies over time. The rhizome releases red sap when broken, and this sap was once used by Native Americans for producing dyes.
