Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica)

This moisture loving plant blooms in late April and lasts quite a long time. Clusters of blue trumpet shaped flowers droop above the large spade shaped leaves, and can be found in moist woodlands, stream sides and floodplains in the southeastern corner of the state. An awesome thing about this native wildflower is that it can be used in the shaded gardens for added interest! This great shaded landscape perennial grows 1-2’ high. Pollinators include bumblebees and butterflies, however due to the trumpet shape of the flower, bees must hover, making them a rare pollinator.
