Purple Prairie Clover (Dalea Purperea)

This Native is a mid-summer bloomer from June through August and inhabits dry and moist prairies, savannas and open woodlands in the southwest part of Minnesota. Purple Prairie Clover stands 2-3’ high and prefers full sun and is a tough plant, tolerating poor soils and drought. These natives are nitrogen fixers, so they don’t need any fertilizer applications. The flowers are compact pink-purple and can be left on the plant for winter interest if desired. Good companions include other native prairie plants such as Wild Bergamot, Butterfly Weed and small grasses.
